Sequences and Series

Sections 8.1 - 8.5 are planned to be covered until 4/2/10
Your skills checklist for Chapter 8 are listed below. Please copy these to a sticky on your laptop or write them down in your notebooks. I ask that you refrain from printing them since you have access to them on your laptop/electronically at all times. Please keep in mind that the orange, Pre-Calculus textbook is a class set textbook. We do not have enough for every student to take home so plan to use your time wisely to get questions answered and work done in class.

Skills List
On my own, without the assistance of the textbook, solutions guide, a classmate, or an instructor, I should be able to...

1. Use sequence notation to write the terms of sequences. (8.1)
2. Use factorial notation. (8.1)
3. Use summation notation to write sums. (8.1)
4. Find sums of infinite series. (8.1)
5. Recognize, write, and find the nth term of arithmetic sequences. (8.2)
6. Find the nth partial sums of arithmetic sequences. (8.2)
7. Recognize, write, and find the nth term of geometric sequences. (8.3)
8. Find nth partial sums of geometric sequences. (8.3)
9. Find sums of infinite geometric series. (8.3)
10. Use geometric sequences to model & solve problems. (8.3)
11. Use mathematical induction to prove formulas. (8.4)
12. Use the Binomial Theorem to calculate binomial coefficients. (8.5)
13. Use Pascal's triangle to calculate binomial coefficients. (8.5)
14. Use binomial coefficients to write binomial expressions. (8.5)

Keep in mind that the videos above are a resource. They may or may not have material that applies directly to our math class, and might not necessarily cover everything we need to cover in class. So although they are very helpful, make sure you are not just learning the material in the videos.

There are MANY resources both in class and online that you have access to - UTILIZE THEM!

Stimulus & Response...

Between stimulus and response, there is a space.

In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response.

In our response lies our growth and happiness.
